Police give green light to 'party buses'
It's legal to convert a school bus, but there might be issues with insurance
By TH staff

QUESTION: Is it legal to buy old school buses and use them to conduct business as a "party bus" for outings like birthday and bachelorette parties? There are companies with properly licensed drivers and insurance that pay income taxes as part of their business, but what about the people out there who are operating their own bus service as a side business?

ANSWER: It is legal to buy an old school bus and use the vehicle as a "party bus" for outings like birthday parties.

"You can do that," said Assistant Police Chief Terry Tobin. "There are no laws or restrictions on that use."

He added that there might be additional issues with things like insurance for the newly converted "party bus."

Section 321.284A of the Iowa Code handles issues that pertain to open containers in motor vehicles and the passengers inside those vehicles.

It states that the ordinance banning passengers from having an open bottle or other receptacle that contains alcohol does not apply "to a passenger being transported in a motor vehicle designed, maintained or used primarily for the transportation of persons for compensation."
